Center of Excellence for Biomedical Research of the University of Genoa (CEBR).
The CEBR was founded during the year 2000 when , following a nationwide contest among the Italian Universities, the MIUR ( Ministry of University and research) selected 11 proposals for setting up centers of excellence aimed to develop and establish research activities in the country.
According with the MIUR statements the Centers of Excellence should impersonate the corner stones of the national research policy, thereafter the MIUR select every three years the most promising proposal giving a full financial support for the first three years of activity.
Necessary requirements for the research centers to be supported by MIUR are:
- the fields of specialization should be interdisciplinary to the aim of acquiring, in the medium/long run, opportunities for interdependency and technological convergence to the economical and social innovation;
- integration of the several research activities with advanced training activities in order to enhance the scientific and technological national foundation and to create enterprise initiatives within innovative economical activities;
- acquisition of science-industry partnerships to support research on strategies for medium/large-sized enterprises and to attract foreign investments from multinational companies in fields of highly intensity of acquaintance;
- choice of organizational strategies coherent with the development of networks for national and international cooperation, attracting Italian researchers working abroad and scientific personalities at international level, also mobility of researchers among Universities, and public and private research centers.
At the end of the third year each center goes through an evaluation process aimed to identify those that have developed a research activity worth of extended support.
The CEBR started his activities in October 2002 thereafter it was supported for three years by a grant of the MIUR who, together with the University of Genoa, at the end of the first three years gave the approval for the center ‘s activities and approved his development’s programs extending the authorization to operate for five years more.
